Since publishing our exploratory paper “In the Pursuit of Reproductive Justice in Lebanon” in the winter of 2018, we’ve spent quite some time furthering our investigation and understanding of what Reproductive Justice (RJ) means to us. Since 2020, we have held four reading retreats in Lebanon, bringing together people from different disciplines and movements. In 2025, we expanded this work by hosting our first Regional Reproductive Justice Retreat. It brought together feminists from Arabic-speaking countries to explore what RJ means to them in their different contexts, and what it might mean to all of us in this part of the world. Questions will continue to travel with this retreat, and we’re excited to bring them home to inform, challenge, and create connections across different movements in Lebanon.

RJ begins with a question that is larger than access to reproductive healthcare or the right to choose: it is a framework for examining the structures that shape our ability to live, reproduce, raise children, care for one another, and sustain collective life. In the Reproductive Justice Reading Retreat, we will examine how these structures are systematically destroyed, withheld, or made available only to some

Starting with the political history of RJ, we’ll explore how struggles over reproduction are bound up with struggles over land and liberation, environment, genocide, borders, displacement, violence, healthcare, sexuality, gender, and disability. We’ll ask what becomes possible when we understand these struggles as interconnected, and whether RJ can help us build solidarities against the structures that determine who has the right to live, remain on their land, care for one another, and sustain their communities and futures.

This retreat will explore Reproductive Justice through the following five themes:

Who can apply?

This retreat is designed to bring different movements into conversation and explore how Reproductive Justice can serve as a framework for working across, rather than within, political silos. So if you live in Lebanon, are from this region, are interested in political organizing, and ideally have participated in social movements, we would love to hear from you.

Dates and deadlines:

Date: Friday, December 11 at 7 PM - Sunday, December 13 in the evening
Location: Details will be shared with selected participants.
Cost: The A Project will cover accommodation, meals, and transportation to and from the retreat.
Apply by: Wednesday, October 28, 2026 at midnight. You will hear from us within the following week.

Before we meet, each participant will receive a booklet bringing together book excerpts, academic articles, opinion pieces, and personal stories. You will have two to three weeks to read the booklet in full, choose one theme to explore more deeply, and lead a discussion around one reading of your choice.

The readings are in both Arabic and English. Many of the English readings have been translated into Arabic, though a small number of them remain in English. Discussions will take place primarily in Arabic, with English used when needed. Participants can present their chosen reading in whichever language they feel most comfortable using.
