My vulva’s color is darker than my skin. Does this mean I have an infection?
Vulvas can change in color and sometimes become darker as we grow, particularly around the labias (also called lips). This is very normal for most people, and the change is often the result of changes in hormones, such as puberty, taking pills, pregnancy, and so on. Labias also get darker when aroused as a result of the blood rushing into the area. There’s no reason to worry when that happens, it’s very normal. Unless there’s bumps, scars, pimples, warts or rashes, it’s most likely to be just that.
Sometimes shaving darkens the area around the vulva as well and causes ingrown hairs. Moisturizing the area helps reduce the irritability and dryness caused by shaving.
