Sex and Society Retreat: Call for Participants

Hello!

We are very excited to share with you plans for our upcoming Sex and Society Retreat. This retreat will introduce us to critical and foundational theories of sexuality and gender politics. The discussions at the retreat will cover such topics as the social construction of sexuality, sexuality and the nation, and intersections with sex, class, and race. Each retreat will bring together up to 15 people preferably from diverse backgrounds, whether academic, artistic, and/or political. One of our main objectives is to take time to distance ourselves from our studies, work, and everyday lives. It is for that reason that these retreats will be held in Kfardebian over a weekend, spanning from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.

Although the retreats rely on mostly academic readings, no background in academia is required for participation. We’ve designed the program to be engaging and inclusive to anyone who would like to join. Each participant will receive a booklet with a number of required readings 2 wks+ before the retreat to be able to cover the material in time. 

The agenda and readings are divided into the following themes:

• SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF SEXUALITY
• SEX AND NATION
• SEX, RACE AND CLASS
• THE INVENTION OF HETEROSEXUALITY
• COMPULSORY HETEROSEXUALITY
• THE INVENTION OF HOMOSEXUALITY

Note: Unlike the three previous and successful — according to anonymous participant evaluations :) — retreats, this specific retreat will mostly be held in English.

Location & Dates:

We will be generously hosted by the fantastic and welcoming people at Auberge Beity in Kfradebian.

The retreat begins on Friday evening (7:00 pm) and ends on Sunday afternoon (6:00 pm).

Participants who wish to sign up will need to be available on the following dates: September 2, 3, and 4, 2016

Fees:

All fees will be covered by the A project. You just need to be there, be chatty and ready to discuss the reading material. 

How to sign up:

We kindly ask all attendees to fill the Sign-Up Form by Monday August 15, 2016.

Unfortunately, we can only host 15 participants, but there will be other retreats in the future for those who will not be able to join us this September.
